BGA Assembly and Rework Services in the UK

BGA Assembly, X-Ray Inspection and Engineering Rework

BGA packages give you high connection density, tidy compact layouts and solid electrical performance. The catch? Their solder joints hide underneath the package, well out of reach for any normal visual check. So getting the process right — tight control, careful thermal management, precise placement and the right inspection — really does matter.

At PCB Company, we’re a UK-based electronics manufacturing partner handling BGA assembly and rework for businesses that need a hand with new builds, prototype fixes, component swaps, engineering changes and rescuing high-value board assemblies that would otherwise be written off.

We’ll take on a single one-off, a small batch or ongoing production runs, and there’s no standard minimum order.

Maybe you’re bringing a fresh BGA design to life, swapping out a part that’s gone obsolete, cleaning up an assembly fault or upgrading a board you already have. Whatever it is, our engineers will look over your data and point you toward a sensible way to get it done — with project communication handled here in the UK and support extending right across Europe.

BGA Assembly vs BGA Rework

BGA assembly covers placement and soldering of BGA packages as part of a new PCB build. BGA rework is used when an existing assembly needs a package removed, replaced or reballed because of a component change, assembly defect, engineering modification or board repair. In both cases, hidden solder joints make process control and X-ray inspection important parts of the verification route.

Commercial BGA Assembly for Complex PCB Designs

Meeting and Exceeding Industry Standards

Ball grid array packages come into play when a designer has to fit a huge number of interconnections into very little board space. You’ll find them in processors, memory devices, communications gear, industrial controllers and plenty of other dense electronic systems.

Good BGA work takes more than dropping the part in the right spot. Pad design, solder mask definition, the PCB surface finish, how the paste is deposited, the state of the package, board flatness and the reflow profile all leave their mark on the finished joints.

Our BGA assembly service sits inside a broader PCB assembly and manufacturing setup. That means your project can run as one joined-up process instead of being split across a separate fabricator, component supplier, assembler and test house.

Commercial options on offer:

  • Prototype and quick-turn PCB assembly
  • Partial turnkey assembly
  • Full turnkey PCB assembly
  • Consignment assembly
  • Customer-supplied boards or components
  • RoHS-compliant work, plus specified non-RoHS requirements
  • Fine-pitch BGA and other bottom-terminated components
  • Low-volume, high-mix and full production builds

BGA Rework for Prototype and Production Problems

BGA rework earns its keep at several points in a product’s life.

At the prototype stage, it lets your engineers swap a damaged or wrongly specified device without hanging around for a whole new build.

During new product introduction, you might need rework to bring in an approved engineering change before the next PCB revision turns up.

For products already out there, BGA replacement can rescue valuable assemblies, deal with a part going obsolete or upgrade a device while you hang on to the PCB you’ve already qualified.

Whether rework is the right call always comes back to board condition, whether the part’s available, how reliable it needs to be and what a replacement would cost.

Our Controlled BGA Rework Process

Reliable BGA rework depends on a process you can repeat, one that looks after the component and the PCB in equal measure. Too much heat, or heat that’s uneven, can cook the laminate, lift pads, knock nearby parts out of place or leave you with a repair that won’t last.

Engineering Review:

We go through the bill of materials, assembly data, component details, the fault you’ve described and any inspection or test results you’ve already got.

Gerber and placement files help us pin down pad geometry, part orientation and the features around it.

Board and Component Assessment:

We check the assembly for visible damage, contamination, warpage, signs of earlier repairs and anything that puts neighbouring components at risk.

We also confirm the replacement device against the exact manufacturer part number and package you’ve specified.

Component Removal and Site Preparation:

The old BGA comes off using a controlled, localised heating process. Then we prep the pad field carefully, so the new part can be lined up and soldered without picking up avoidable contamination or damage.

BGA Reballing or Replacement:

If reballing fits the job, the component gets a fresh array of solder balls before it goes back on. Otherwise, a brand-new part goes in.

Getting the alignment spot on is everything here — once the part’s down, those joints vanish underneath it.

Inspection and Testing:

We inspect the reworked area using whatever method suits the package and the project. Where you’ve got test data, fixtures or procedures to hand, we can fold in electrical or functional testing too.

X-Ray Inspection for Hidden BGA Joints

Since BGA connections live under the package, a visual once-over simply can’t tell you whether the joints formed properly.

PCB Company runs automated X-ray inspection, both 2D and 3D, for BGA and other fine-pitch assemblies.

X-ray helps flag up things like:

  • Solder bridging
  • Components sitting off-centre
  • Uneven solder distribution
  • Open connections
  • Voiding
  • Misshapen solder balls

Those findings are best read alongside the package design, the PCB pad layout, the acceptance criteria that apply and any electrical test results you have.

Our broader inspection and test capabilities cover:

  • Automated optical inspection
  • In-circuit testing
  • Flying probe testing
  • Board-level functional testing
  • System-level functional testing
  • Engineering inspection and rework support

So you can pick a verification route that matches what the board is worth, where it’s going and how costly a failure would be.

BGA Rework, Replacement and Reballing

A dud or badly fitted BGA doesn’t automatically mean the whole assembly heads for the bin. As long as the PCB, pad field and surrounding circuitry are still in decent shape, careful rework is often a far more sensible option than rebuilding from scratch.

Our rework covers component removal, replacement and reballing. We can also take on wider engineering rework when a board revision, part change or corrective step is on the cards.

The sort of jobs that land on our bench:

  • Replacing faulty BGA components
  • Removing devices that were wrongly specified or programmed
  • Fitting an upgraded or alternative part
  • Reballing a reusable BGA package
  • Sorting out prototype or pre-production assemblies
  • Recovering high-value boards after something’s gone wrong in assembly
  • Rolling out engineering changes ahead of the next PCB revision
  • Chasing down faults around fine-pitch components

Before we quote, we weigh up the package, the PCB build, how much room there is around neighbouring parts, the board’s condition, the design data you can share and how sensitive the assembly is to heat.

That look tells us whether rework actually makes sense — both technically and financially.

Working with a UK BGA Partner — and Serving Europe Too

Precision Engineering from Concept to Delivery

Plenty of our customers come to us after being let down by long lead times or patchy communication from overseas suppliers. Keeping the work here in the UK shortens that feedback loop — you’re talking to the engineers doing the job, in your time zone, in plain English.

Being UK-based also helps on the practical side:

  • Faster turnaround and shorter shipping for customers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Straightforward logistics to European customers, with experience handling cross-border documentation post-Brexit
  • Familiarity with UK and EU compliance, including RoHS and REACH expectations, plus specified non-RoHS work where your application calls for it
  • Traceability and support that hold up for regulated sectors such as aerospace, medical, defence and industrial control

Whether you’re a start-up in Cambridge, an established manufacturer in the Midlands or a design house on the Continent, you get the same joined-up service — from bare board through to a tested, inspected assembly.

Why Choose PCB Company for BGA Work?

For a B2B buyer, BGA rework is never just a soldering job. The real aim is to save the board, keep the programme on schedule and cut the odds of another failure down the line. Here’s what we bring:

  • One UK supplier for PCB fabrication, sourcing, assembly, inspection and testing
  • Engineering support for DFM, DFA and DFT
  • Fine-pitch assembly and BGA rework capability
  • X-ray inspection for hidden solder joints
  • Prototype, partial turnkey, full turnkey and consigned options
  • RoHS and specified non-RoHS support
  • No standard minimum order quantity
  • UK-based project communication
  • Support for businesses right across the UK and Europe

Because we look at the whole assembly rather than the BGA on its own, we can also spot manufacturing risks early and help you set up a steadier path for future production.

What to Send for a BGA Assembly or Rework Quote

To get you an accurate quote, send over as much of this as you can:

  • Gerber or ODB++ manufacturing data
  • Bill of materials
  • Pick-and-place or centroid file
  • Assembly drawings
  • BGA manufacturer and full part number
  • PCB quantity
  • Required delivery date
  • Details of the fault, modification or replacement
  • Photographs of the assembly
  • Any previous inspection or test results
